Chef/owner Tim Spinner's La Calaca Feliz is opening their doors today at 4 p.m. today at 2321 Fairmount Avenue, the former home of Illuminaire in the Fairmount neighborhood. Spinner has tapped longtime Xochitl chef Lucio Palazzo to head up the kitchen, which is focusing on modern Mexican cuisine. Spinner got his start in Jose Garces' kitchens, and was the executive chef at Distrito, and brings a lot of the same flavors to his new spot. The former tenant left behind a beastly wood-fired pizza oven, which the crew will use to flame rellenos and nachos.
The restaurant has a 10-seat bar and enough room for 60 diners, including some pretty cozy 4-person round booths. Artist Alison Dilworth has painted numerous whimsical murals throughout the restaurant, just as she did in Spinner's other restaurant, Cantina Feliz in Fort Washington. In spring time, the crew is planning to open up a backyard beer garden, so stay tuned for more details.
