Chef Matt Levin ended his relationship with Barry Gutin and Larry Cohen at Square Peg this past weekend. Levin verified his departure to Eater via text, but wouldn't talk about his next stop or if there was a plan in place for the near future.
While the concept for Square Peg sounded solid on paper, the execution never lived up to the talent Levin displayed in previous stops at Lacroix and Adsum. The critics weren't very kind to Levin this time around, and even Craig LaBan—who is the unofficial President of the Matt Levin Fan Club—only rang out one bell for his efforts.
There's no word on whether this means Square Peg will undergo a conceptual overhaul, but the crowds were always pretty consistent, as close proximity to the hospital and the Walnut Street Theater meant a lot of foot traffic. Stay tuned to see where Levin will turn up next.
UPDATE: Levin announced that he has decided to stay on with Gutin and Cohen, but will be helping out legendary chef Jean Marie Lacroix at his food service company, Brûlée Catering, where he'll get the opportunity to work with high-end ingredients while spending time with his former kitchen colleague. Good luck, Matt!
