On January 24, one of the most famous beers in the world, Orkney Skull Splitter (which scored a perfect rating of 100 on Beer Advocate and a 95 on Ratebeer), will be on draft for the first time in the U.S. Of course it's happening here in Philly, so if you're in the vicinity of the P.O.P.E. on that date at 7 p.m., you should make it a point to get a pint. The beer itself is a Wee Heavy, a classic Scotch-style ale, but is also the namesake beer of the Barleywine festival known as Split Thy Skull, which has been a Philly tradition for almost 20 years.
To celebrate the big release, the P.O.P.E. is having a viking party (the beer is named after Torfinn Hausakljuv, the famous viking) where the best Instagram pic wins a prize pack including pint glasses and a gift certificate to the East Passyunk beer mecca. For beer nerds, this is a huge deal, and for those of you just getting into the scene, put this date on your calendar in pen.
