Over at the Insider, Michael Klein's got a report on The Good King Tavern, which opened over the weekend in the space that used to be Chick's. The new spot is owned by father-and-daughter team Bernard and Chloe Grigri, and the kitchen's being headed up by chef Paul Lyons, who most recently spent a season at Morgan's Pier with George Sabatino.
The brasserie-style menu offers classics like steak frites, escargots, and socca (a chickpea-flour pancake that's a staple in Nice), with a few twists—a take on frisee aux lardons verges toward Southern comfort food with the addition of butternut squash and pecans; the croque-monsieur swaps in housemade bologna for the more typical ham.
There's also a very solid menu of classic cocktails, but a selection of six house wines available by the glass or pichet seems even more fitting for the space and menu.
