Philly's favorite German beer hall, Brauhaus Schmitz, is celebrating 4 years of booming business tonight at 718 South Street. Owners Doug Hager and Kelly Schmitz toiled for years at the now-defunct Ludwig's Garten, and realized that once Ludwig's closed, Philly would have no legit German restaurants in the area.
After spending almost a year abroad working in restaurants in Köln, Hager and Schmitz came back to the U.S. with plans of their own, which became Brauhaus Schmitz. Since they opened the doors in 2009, Brauhaus has been packed every damn day, and made a star out of chef Jeremy Nolen, who has graced the pages of Food & Wine and cooked at the James Beard House.
Tonight, from 5 until 7 p.m., there will be discounted beers aplenty during happy hour. And, starting at 7, the real party begins and the kitchen will be whipping up and passing out complimentary appetizers and plenty of mirth-making. So, be sure to stop by tonight and congratulate the Brauhaus crew on four long years in business on South Street, and to another successful 20 years ahead.
