3601 Locust Walk
Status: Open
Although chef Rick Bayless was in town last week for the grand opening of the newly renovated ARCH Building at Penn (eating at Tinto and FedNuts and drinking at Hop Sing and saying characteristically nice Rick Bayless-y things all the while), today is the official opening day of his Tortas Frontera.
Until now, Tortas Frontera has been best known to most of us as the only reason to embrace a long layover at O'Hare. While this one is technically a campus dining option, it's open to the public, and open all day most days of the week (notably, the shortest day is Saturday). The menu includes a number of tortas (all under $9, with a few vegetarian options and a handful of breakfast-only versions), smaller open-faced molletes, guacamole, soups, and salads.
Unlike the airport iterations of the brand, this student-centered location isn't selling margaritas, but they are serving Rival Bros. coffee, a variety of aguas frescas, and salted caramel hot chocolate. As with all the others, the focus is on local suppliers and fast-ish casual food that's made to order.
Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Saturday: 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.
