St. Benjamin Nanobrewery Is Getting Closer

Equipment and deliveries are coming in, but there's still plenty of work to be done.

Kensington nanobrewery St. Benjamin Brewing Co. has certainly been taking its time: It was more than two years ago that we first heard founder Tim Patton had found a home for the brewery. At the time, he hoped he might have things started by May of 2012. Now, it's looking more like brewing could begin in the space in May of 2014. The good news is, what's past is past, and May is happening any minute now.

St. Benjamin will brew in just three barrels, with plans to self-distribute. If they don't hit any more snags, the goal is to have four beers ready in time for Philly Beer Week: Transcontinental (California common/steam beer, 5.4% ABV), Liason (lavender saison, 6.0% ABV), Foul Weather Jack (English mild ale, 4.5% ABV) and Wit or Witout (Belgian witbier, 5.4% ABV). Patton has also brought on Christina Burris as co-brewer.

Ultimately, the plan is to operate a full brewpub, which will serve food. Planning for that won't begin in earnest until the brewing operation is up and running.
