WASH WEST — Heads up: tonight is the third monthly installment of Cheu Noodle Bar's Ramen Rumbles, starting at 6 p.m. Going head-to-head tonight are Eli Collins of Pub & Kitchen, serving up a vitello tonnato-inspired ramen, and Justin Petruce of Petruce et al., with a bowl including tomato dashi, crab, and charred scallions. As usual, $25 gets you two mini ramens, a can of beer, and a ballot to pick your favorite bowl. [EaterWire]
FISHTOWN — Tommy Up's controversial Kickstarter-funded tiki bar, The Yachtsman, is a few weeks out in Fishtown, and Michael Klein got some early inside views of the work in progress. The aesthetic, inspired by "a fictional yachtsman and the stuff he saw on his journeys," is described by one of the designers as "a tiki interpretation of Pee-wee's Playhouse." [Philly.com]
HEADHOUSE — Twenty restaurants competed at Saturday's third annual Dog Days of Summer hot dog cook-off, which completely packed the Shambles at Headhouse. The judge's top pick was Mike Stollenwerk's "Sea Dog," which topped a Sabrett dog with crab salad and spicy pepper relish (you can try it at Headhouse Crab & Oyster Co.); the people's choice award went to Bistro Romano. There was also a separate amateur toppings competition (entrants were provided with buns and dogs), where the overall favorite was the "Dickmom Dog" from FedNuts employee Lilly Vamberi. Her dog, topped with Elixr Coffee barbecue sauce, Kenzinger-battered onion strings, and roasted long hot relish, earned a spot on the Hot Diggity menu for the month of August. [EaterWire]
