Now open in Manayunk, the latest from Brian Sirhal and Tim Spinner (Taqueria/La Calaca/Cantina Feliz) is a hunting lodge/greasy spoon hybrid called Beast & Ale — a bit of a departure from the Mexican concepts they made their names with.
The interior, by Canno Design (who recently worked on Charlie Was A Sinner), features a full bar (eight taps and one hand pump) with a small dining room and fireplace downstairs, and a larger dining room upstairs that seats 40l. A second-floor deck offers outdoor seating for 28.
Matthew Savastano, formerly sous at La Calaca Feliz, is on as exec. The menu is heavy on diner-style American classics, including fried bologna sandwiches, disco fries, buttermilk fried chicken, and their signature "Beast Burger," a double-patty burger with American cheese on a soft bun. There's plenty on the menu for vegetarians, too, as long as you can stomach being completely surrounded by the idea of dead animals.
Dinner starts at 4 p.m. nightly, with brunch service coming soon. Happy hour runs weekdays from 4:30pm to 6:30 pm., and there's also a late-night happy hour on Friday and Saturday from 11 p.m. to midnight.
