Jay Z's Mom's New Cafe; Tommy Up's Tiki Bar Soft Opens

NEWARK, NJ — Road trip alert: Gloria Carter (a.k.a. Jay Z's mom) opened a small cafe in Newark, NJ this week. Called Diamondz N Da Ruff, it looks cozy and cute and promises "Soul Food Sundays." Eater National got a look inside. [-EN-]

FISHTOWN — Tommy Up's (PYT) new tiki bar, the Yachtsman, is in soft-opening mode this weekend. According to their Facebook page, the official opening party for their Kickstarter backers is next Wednesday and the official grand opening next Thursday, but they'll be open tonight at 6 p.m. (with a limited drink menu) if you want to check it out sooner. CENTER CITY/UCITY/KOP — About a year after making the controversial switch to their current fresh-cut fries, Shake Shack announced today that they'll be returning to their old frozen crinkle-cut fries this fall. An all-natural version of the frozen crinkle-cuts will be back in all of their stores by November. [Official site via Eater NY]
