Matyson Quietly Closes in Rittenhouse

The BYOB staple has shut its doors for good.

Philly's BYO scene has taken a hit as Matyson suddenly and quietly closed its doors over the holiday weekend. The closure was initially reported by Foobooz, who noted that the only public acknowledgment from the restaurant came in the form of an Instagram post that was later removed. The shutter was confirmed to Foobooz by an employee on-site; this afternoon, the restaurant issued its own statement via Facebook:

No announcement of the closure was made in advance. An earlier post to Matyson's Facebook page announced that the restaurant would be closed for the Fourth of July, noting that the usual weekly tasting menu would not return the following week "because of the holiday." It turned out that July 3 was the restaurant's final night of service.

The New American restaurant was opened in 2003 by Matt and Sonjia Spector along with Butch Puchowitz, father of Ben Puchowitz (Cheu Noodle Bar, Bing Bing), who served as Matyson's chef before leaving to strike out on his own. Ben told the Insider today simply that his father was "ready to retire."
