Take a Nostalgia Trip Through Bud & Marilyn's

Look around Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran's latest.

Now open in Midtown Village, Bud & Marilyn's is the newest addition to Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran's 13th Street portfolio, channeling retro vibes and updating classic American dishes from all over the map.

Turney took inspiration from childhood memories of nights spent "downing a few Shirley Temples" at her grandparents' restaurant in Ripon, WI. (Bud & Marilyn's takes its name from her grandparents, and their caricatures are displayed at the new bar.) To nail the aesthetic, Turney and Safran collaborated with designer Kate Rohrer of Rohe Design, who describes the look as "old-school rec room." That description is doubly apt for the corridor of restrooms at the back of the space, which is lined with shelves of board games and old records. The mid-century modern decor marries overt nostalgia and touches of kitsch with retro swank to feel grown up and childlike all at once.

The space includes a 65-seat dining room, two open kitchen counters toward the back, and a 12-seat bar. Dinner is now served nightly; happy hour is at the bar from 5 to 7 p.m. every weeknight (drink specials only for now; happy hour food specials will start on Monday, August 31).
