Rooster Soup Co. Is Coming to Sansom Street

The Federal Donuts crew's charitable new concept has finally found a home.

It's been more than a year since the Federal Donuts camp took to Kickstarter to fund Rooster Soup Co., and now it finally has a location nailed down: 1526 Sansom St., just a block away from FedNuts' Center City shop (and sibling spots Dizengoff and Abe Fisher). The restaurant group is, however, still keeping entirely mum on the anticipated timeline to opening.

The soup and sandwich concept arose out of an idea to make use of leftover chicken parts generated by Federal Donuts, and to turn over 100% of the new endeavor's net profits to Broad Street Ministry, which provides meals and a wide variety of social services to Philadelphians in need.

The restaurant will sell much more than chicken soup, though. The globally influenced menu will include a rotating selection of soups, including vegetarian and vegan options, plus salads and sandwiches. And Rooster Soup will also feature a full bar, focusing on classic cocktails, canned and bottled beers, and house wine selections.

To give a sense of the menu's breadth, soups will include matzo ball, mushroom barley, Portuguese fisherman's stew, borscht, pozole, celery root, Yemenite-style curry with coconut milk, and many more. The group is also teasing some more chewing-intensive menu items like corned beef Cuban sandwiches, patty melts, a BLT (where the B stands for smoked beets), and some very healthy-sounding Asian-influenced salads.

The 1,400-square-foot space will allow for about 40 seats. It previously housed Sansom Kabob House, which closed last fall with plans to move to a new location on South Street. Design for Rooster Soup Co. is in the hands of of Boxwood Architects (whose previous work includes the CookNSolo empire, Zavino, several Garces Group projects, and others). Hours are still subject to change, but the current plan is to stay open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Although the Kickstarter campaign already raised more than its original goal, donations are still being accepted toward the project and can be made via the official site.

Rooster Soup Co., 1526 Sansom St., opening TBD.
