Your Dish, Your Pie: Stargazy Lets You Design Your Own British Pie From Scratch

BYOD, a.k.a. "bring your own dish"

Stargazy [Facebook]

Sam Jacobson has a great idea. The chef/owner of Stargazy, the insanely popular British pie and mash shop, is implementing a "BYOD" option — that is, Bring Your Own Dish. Here are the rules:

  1. Drop into Stargazy with your own baking dish, whatever size you'd like (be reasonable, no metal tubs please). Jacobson says he prefers non-disposable bakeware if possible.
  2. Request your filling (again, be reasonable). Savory or sweet, if it's something Jacobson has on the menu for the day (check the Instagram for daily menu changes and specials), the pie could be prepared in a matter of hours. If it's something requiring ingredients he needs to go out and buy, give him a day or two to prepare it for you.
  3. Arrange a pick-up time for your fresh pie. Upon request, he'll keep the pie uncooked, so you can pop it in the oven when you get home. Make sure to ask for baking instructions.
  4. He'll price the pie according to size and filling. His pricing equation is simple: how many "regular" pies make up your pie, minus a few dollars off the top. Remember: Stargazy is cash-only at the moment.

Keep in mind: Stargazy does not have a phone line. If you see a Stargazy phone number floating around on the internet, ignore it — it doesn't lead to anywhere. All transactions must be done in person.
