Federal Donuts announced today that its insanely popular fried chicken sandwich will join the permanent menu lineup at all of its shops beginning on Monday, September 14. The sandwich has been the runaway food hit of this summer, originally making its debut at FedNuts' temporary location at Spruce Street Harbor Park and sparking major lines during a couple of limited engagements at their permanent shops.
If you're just tuning in, the sandwich is a boneless version of FedNuts' double-fried chicken on a Martin's potato roll, with buttermilk ranch seasoning, spicy sauce, American cheese, and pickles. It'll hit the menu at $6.75 and, like the rest of the chicken offerings, will be available daily starting at 11 a.m.
The final day for Port FedNuts and SSHP is Sunday, September 27, for those that would still like to try the sandwich in its native riverside habitat.
The fried chicken sandwich frenzy has hardly been limited to Philly this summer, with high-profile versions coming from the likes of David Chang and Danny Meyer. Though FedNuts fans have been dreaming out loud about the possibility of a chicken sandwich for ages, it was last year's addition of the spacious North Philly commissary location that has really smoothed the way for more efficiency and growth. (As you may recall, that store celebrated its grand opening with an extremely limited novelty offering of fried chicken doughnut sandwiches.) As co-owner Tom Henneman told Eater earlier this summer, hinting at the permanent addition of the sandwich, "We maybe have something that's a little bit more appealing to a broader market. Not everybody comes in and wants to have four pieces of chicken."
