The husband and wife duo behind Earth Bread + Brewery, Tom Baker and Peggy Zwerver, teamed up with another husband and wife duo, Stew and Julie Keener, owner/operators of Baggataway Tavern in Conshohocken to create Bar Hygge, opening as early as next week at 1720 Fairmount Avenue.
The Danish word "Hygge" (say it: "HOO-ga") has no literal English translation. It's a mindset, or an understanding, even a descriptor; it's an adjective, noun, verb, what have you (a notion Philadelphians understand more than most). According to Helen Russell of The Telegraph, it's "the absence of anything annoying or emotionally overwhelming; taking pleasure from the presence of gentle, soothing things." So, candles, camaraderie, and coziness — whatever it is that makes you feel at ease, it's that which Bar Hygge hopes to capture.
The ten-barrel brewhouse, under the designation "Brewery Techne", will offer six Baker-brewed drafts, four guest beers, two draft reds and whites, and a tap for cocktails (starting with an Aperol Spritz). The full bar will offer cocktails as well as wine by the glass and bottle.
Chef Chris Galbraith will be running the kitchen at Bar Hygge, coming up with a menu of simple comforts: rotating meat and cheese boards, roasted chicken, braised meats, and the like (menus to come). Hours will go from 4 p.m. - close, daily.
