First, there was the salted caramel budino, Barbuzzo’s trifle-like custard dessert which layered salted caramel sauce with dark chocolate chocolate cookie crumbs and whipped cream. It was, and still is, a perfect marriage of flavors, textures, and trends (it debuted in 2010, when salted caramel was all the rage). Philly fell in love. Then Marcie Turney and Val Safran brought on the frozen budino pops—the same idea, but in popsicle form. After that: budino doughnuts, glazed yeast donut stuffed with budino, then rolled in salted caramel crunch, and finished with dark chocolate cookie crumbs and fleur de sel. Today, just in time for Sweets Week, Turney and Safran announced the dessert’s next evolution: Salted Caramel Budino Stuffed Cruffin.
That’s right, a cruffin. What a cronut is to a doughnut, a cruffin is the same to a muffin, and this one gets stuffed with caramel budino pudding and topped with dark chocolate cookie crumbs, a touch of caramel sauce, a few grains of fleur de sel, and then rolled in sugar. Get them this Friday and Saturday, October 28-29, for $6 each at Barbuzzo’s upstairs events space from 11 a.m. to sell-out. If you like it, Turney and Safran encourage you to share the love using the hashtag #BudinoCruffin.
