Thai Rolled Ice Cream Headed for Rittenhouse Square

Washington Square’s Sweet Charlie’s nabs another great location on Walnut Street

Co-owner Kyle Billig and his dog, Charlie

When Sweet Charlie’s, the popular Thai rolled ice cream shop by two Cherry Hill brothers, opened in Washington Square, it was an instant hit. Prime right-off-the-Square real estate specializing in 2016’s trendiest dessert drew big crowds and long lines, often wrapping around the block on weekends. And sometime in the first quarter of 2017, Rittenhouse will get one of its own.

19-year-old Kyle Billig, with his 21-year-old brother Jacob, have signed the lease to 1921 Walnut Street, right off the Square, and are aiming for a March 1, 2017 opening for the new flagship location. Billig tells Eater the concept will remain just the same: Thai rolled ice cream made with preservative-free cream or yogurt, available in a cup or on a long, glazed donut (like a hot dog). After Rittenhouse, University City and Fishtown are next, hopefully by summer 2017.

Additionally, Billig is also launching a made-to-order crepe program around Thanksgiving-time to combat the wintertime blues. Stuff them with mousses, fruits, and, of course, Nutella.
