Kentucky Derby 2016: Where to Party in Philadelphia

Break out your seersucker and your fancy hat, because this Saturday is the jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby. Derby Day is a welcome excuse to drink bourbon and be fancy, and plenty of places are inviting occasions for both.

The main event of the weekend has to be a Kentucky Derby-style fundraiser at New Liberty Distillery benefiting the Eastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Not only is the distillery itself located in a former horse stable in East Kensington, they're serving draft-poured Rhubarb Juleps made with their own Kinsey Bourbon as well as other Prohibiton Era cocktails. Baby Blues Barbecue is serving up sandwiches and smoked ribs with Southern-inspired sides.

If for you the appeal of the Kentucky Derby actually is about seeing tiny riders atop very fast horses it's not too late to snag a ticket to West Laurel Hill's annual Kentucky Derby Party.A fitting benefit for Hope Springs Equestrian Center it's an event that befits the Derby, from start to finish: live music from the Red Hot Ramblers, a screening of the race itself, mint juleps, and a dress code encouraging southern apparel, bow ties, and derby hats.

Pennsylvania 6 is celebrating in style with a Best Hat & Bow Tie Contest and $8 cocktails, including a Classic Mint Julep, Penn6 Julep, and Blackberry Lemonade.

Red Owl Tavern is betting on a warm day requiring a refreshing julep. Theirs matches Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon, with fresh cucumber and ginger over the classic crushed ice.

Try a hyper-local mint julep at Square 1682. Their Rooftop Julep features Social Still Rye Whiskey, distilled in Bethlehem, PA, along with mint from their rooftop garden, raw sugar, and crushed ice.

In the event that you're busy taking your mom out for dinner on Saturday, stop by Khyber Pass Pub for a Derby Day do-over. Their Frozen Mint Julep, which is the texture of a Slurpee, is lethally strong and available year-round.
