CENTER CITY — For the next three Saturday nights (Sept 17, Sept 24 and Oct 1) at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), “When Abe Met Diz” pops up at Dizengoff with Montreal-style smoked short rib pastrami tucked inside caraway-rye pitas and topped with beet-pickled turnips, dill tehina, sumac slaw, and fried onions. Riffing on the Frosé concept, Abe and Diz are serving "Friesling", that is frozen riesling made in the lemonnana machine. Sandwiches are $12 and Friesling is $8. Quantities are limited, so line up early.
SOUTH PHILLY — Philly’s hottest rooftop bar is bringing together a dozen of East Passyunk’s hottest restaurants on September 26 for Up on the Roof at Bok Bar. Expect hors d'oeuvres from heavy hitters like Bing Bing Dim Sum, Brigantessa, Fond, Laurel, Noord, Townsend and Will. $40 per person, with a cash bar.
FISHTOWN — Frankford Hall’s sixth Oktoberfest brings an all-day block party to Frankford Avenue between Girard and Shackamaxon Streets on September 17. Frankford Hall and Fette Sau will be serving bauernwurst, bratwurst, and warm bavarian pretzels, while beer tents pour seasonal beers. Entertainment includes a drumline kick-off, DJs, a live performance by German pop band The Ja Ja Jas and performances by the GTV Almrausch dancers. Family-friendly activities include mini golf, face painting, and balloon artists.
Earlier in the week, warm up for the big party with an 18-team Cornhole Tournament (September 13, 7 p.m.), a 32-team ping pong tournament (September 14, 7 p.m.), and Frankford Hall’s Bavarian Challenge featuring stein hoisting, distance quarters, pretzel toss, and other fun challenges (September 15, 7 p.m.).
HEADHOUSE — Twisted Tail holds its Third Annual Whiskey Bonanza Thursday, September 22. With tastings of dozens of whiskeys, including Jim Beam, Kinsey, Knob Creek, Calumet, and Collingwood, you might want to take off Friday morning ahead of time. As part of Bourbon Heritage Month, the bonanza will have more than more than 60 whiskeys on hand, a southern pig roast, live music and a bartender contest in which attendees get to vote for a favorite cocktail. $60 for general admission; $75 for VIP which includes an extra hour and uncommon, noteworthy whiskeys not available during the main event.
SPRING GARDEN — An Italian brewhouse hosting a weekend-long Oktoberfest blowout? Works for us. Alla Spina’s taps will be taken over by Victory Brewery and the menu filled with German street food on September 23-25. On Friday, win prizes in the Stein Hoisting Competition and on Saturday, come out for the Street Festival from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. with German style food, games and live music.
PENN’S LANDING — The 14th annual Taste of Philly fundraiser comes to the Independence Seaport Museum on Sunday, September 25 from 1-4 p.m. It benefits Jessie's Day - Give the Gift of Scholarship (in partnership with Gift of Life), which grants scholarships to four local, college-bound organ transplant recipients in honor of Jessica Beth Schwartz who dreamed of graduating college, but didn't make it due to complications from a heart transplant. Expect music, a silent auction, a beer garden and food from local eateries like The Blue Duck, Sweet Nectar, and Conshohocken Italian Bakery. $55; $30 for students with ID.
