As per tradition, Eater asked a group of restaurant journalists, bloggers, and friends of the site to weigh in on the year in food. Here, dining experts share their favorite new restaurants of 2017. It’s no surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to the Philly food scene that Palizzi Social Club, Eater Philly’s Restaurant of the Year, received several mentions.
Drew Lazor, Philadelphia-based freelance writer and author of the upcoming Session Cocktails (Ten Speed Press, May 2018): Baology, Dim Sum House, Friday Saturday Sunday, Goldie, Palizzi Social Club, Poi Dog, Res Ipsa, Rione, Wiz Kid.
Sarah Maiellano, food and travel freelance writer for local and national outlets, including Eater: Friday Saturday Sunday (the bar especially). I'm excited about Suraya — labne is one of my favorite foods.
Alex Tewfik, food editor, Philadelphia magazine: Palizzi (duh), Kanella Grill, Res Ipsa, Royal Boucherie.
Joy Manning, editor of Edible Philly: Royal Boucherie.
Adam Erace, freelance writer: I probably won't be alone in saying this, but I think Palizzi is a really special place, and my favorite opening of 2017. I've loved Joey Baldino's cooking from when he opened Zeppoli, and I'm so happy he's a got a place in the city. Palizzi has a ton of heart, and as a South Philly native, I love to see the social club tradition both updated and respected.
Wendy Ramunno, freelance writer/editor and local editor at Zagat: Palizzi Social Club, Friday Saturday Sunday, Walnut Street Cafe, Rooster Soup Co.
