If you’re a fan of Beiler’s Donuts but not a fan of going to Center City, it’s your lucky day — Philly’s doughnut darling just opened its brand new University City location, ridiculously close to UPenn. Despite being in business for around 35 years, it’s only the beloved doughnut maker’s second Philadelphia store, in addition to its Reading Terminal Market hub. Beiler’s has expanded just one other time, when a Lancaster, PA store was added last summer. The expansions are thanks founder Alvin Beiler’s sons Kevin and Keith Beiler, who now manage the business.
The new Chestnut Street store soft opened briefly on Monday, with the full operation up and running today — fittingly, right in time for Fat Tuesday, the Christian holiday with some sort of tangible historical relationship to doughnuts (although some would say that Polish paczki doughnuts are the one true doughnut of the day).
The University City location is fully-equipped with seating, and will have serve ice cream from Bassetts, as well as coffee on top of all the Beiler’s standards like salted caramel and apple fritter doughnuts. Maybe the new location will even help to keep the line down at the Reading Terminal location — but given that one sells thousands of fried hunks of dough on a daily basis, perhaps don’t count on it.
STATUS — Beiler’s Donuts is now open at 3900 Chestnut Street from Monday to Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursday to Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (closed Sunday)
