Philadelphians will soon be able to dig into a dish of Dorothy ice cream without standing in a line that spills out onto the sidewalk. The New York-based chain Big Gay Ice Cream is about to start selling packaged pints in a handful of cities across the country, including locally. Owners Bryan Petroff and Douglas Quint opened their first and only shop outside of Manhattan here in Philly, at 1351 South Street, in 2015.
The pints will be available at some CVS stores, but most of the locations are outside of Center City, like C-Town, Shop n Bag and Fine Far Supermarket. Nothing shows up on the “Where to Buy” page of Big Gay Ice Cream’s website just yet, but that’s supposed to be filled in next week.
Six of the ice cream flavors also sold at Big Gay Ice Cream shops will be available in pint form, including the popular Salty Pimp scoop (vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, sea salt, and chocolate dip) and the Dorothy (a nod to the Golden Girl’s Bea Arthur made with vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, and crushed vanilla wafer cookies), along with Birfdae Cëk, American Globs, Rocky Roadhouse, and Blueberry Gobbler. There’s also a new flavor named Lunchbox, which brings to mind a PB&J with its strawberry ice cream, strawberry-filled “peanut buttery” cups, and swirls of peanut butter.
