New York ice cream shop 10Below is expanding to Philly. This will be the first out-of-state location for the Thai-style hand-rolled ice creamery, which was the first of its kind in New York City. If the Philly location is anything like the four original ones, expect long lines for made-to-order desserts like the Monkey Business with Nutella and banana and the Cookie Monster with Oreos.
Philly is already familiar with rolled ice cream. Sweet Charlie’s draws the crowds to Washington Square West and Rittenhouse locations and similar shops have since popped up. For those who haven’t seen it in action: Cream and mix-ins are put on a freezing surface, scraped and smoothed together, and rolled to create made-to-order concoctions touted as the freshest ice cream around. 10Below has suggestions combos — like the Strawberry Shawty with strawberries and graham crackers and the Matcha Made In Heaven with green tea and strawberries — or customers can design their own. Rolled ice cream tucked into a “waffle taco” is also available.
10Below opens Friday, September 15, across the street from Liberty Place at 42 S. 17th Street. Ice cream (one per person) will be 50-percent off on opening day. Hours are noon to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and noon to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. *UPDATE*: 10Below pushed its opening day to Saturday, September 23. The half-off deal will take place then.
