The latest tenant to sign on at East Market is District Taco, a Washington, D.C.-based Mexican eatery that started out as a food truck and now has several brick-and-mortar locations, including one that just opened in King of Prussia. District Taco joins a lineup at the new multi-use development that includes Wawa, Iron Hill Brewery, Little Baby’s Ice Cream, and Mom’s Organic Market, along with apartments and offices. Look for it to open on Market Street between 11th and 12th next summer.
The East Market project — currently under construction — spans a city block, from Market to Chestnut and 11th to 12th, with two towers offering about 560 apartments in total.
Osiris Hoil started District Taco as a food truck in Arlington, Virginia, just outside D.C., in 2009. The fast-casual restaurant, which serves Yucatan-style fare, is now in Virginia, D.C., Maryland, and Pennsylvania. This will be the first Philly location.
Hoil had this to say in a statement:
We started as a single taco cart with one vision. As customer demand increased, we quickly outpaced our size, started opening storefronts, and began building a smart team with shared values. The plan here in Philadelphia is the same. We will be a part of the community serving fresh, delicious food to new neighbors and friends. People love our food, so it’s exciting to now bring it to Philadelphia, a city known for its food culture.
Philly, known for its food culture. That still sounds a little weird.
