The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Black Thought, emcee of The Roots, brought their roving surprise dinner party to Northeast Philly last night. Fallon and Trotter traveled to the neighborhood to have a home-cooked meal with Rodney and Khadijah Moore and their children. The Moores won the opportunity by sending a recipe and details about why they wanted to host.
When Fallon and Trotter walked into the house and greeted the family, Fallon immediately said, “it smells so good.” So what was cooking? Salmon cheesesteaks.
Rodney Moore went with a fish version of Philly’s best-known dish because he doesn’t eat meat — he described himself as a pescatarian. He was quick to point out that he’s not the “originator” of the salmon cheesesteak: “I’m not going to take credit for that, but I’m the innovator,” he said. “I put my twist on it with a little stir fry, some spinach and broccoli.”

Fallon was, justifiably, taken aback by the promise of salmon cheesesteaks, saying, “that sounds a little suspicious.” But Moore reassured him: “If you can’t taste it yet, it does sound a little weird, but it’s nice. You’ll be pleased.”
Upon biting into the cheesesteak, which was made with sharp cheddar and provolone and topped with the stir fry, and served with wine, a bowl of potato chips, and Sriracha, Fallon declared it “fantastic.”
