More Than Just Ice Cream, which, true to its name, sold ice cream and other fare, is closing at the end of this month after 43 years. Owners Rachelle Capistrano-Sorg and Dalton Castano announced on Facebook the last day for the restaurant at 1119 Locust Street will be September 27.
More Than Just Ice Cream originally opened on Pine Street in 1975, just a couple blocks from its current location. It relocated to Locust in 1998. Starting out as a dessert shop, the eatery later added lunch, dinner, and brunch, serving American diner-style plates like omelets, burgers, turkey clubs, and grilled cheese sandwiches. It was also known as a neighborhood ice cream destination, with scoops, sundaes, and baked goods, including an oversized “mile high apple pie,” available a la mode, of course.
Capistrano-Sorg and Castano were longtime employees of the restaurant before they bought it a decade ago. Here is their Facebook message announcing the imminent closure:
With heavy hearts full of love we’d like to announce that we are closing our doors this month. We have truly enjoyed serving the community & appreciated being welcomed into your lives. We have known many of you for 20 plus years & you have become like family to us. Thank you for your many years of patronage & support. We will miss seeing you on a daily basis. Our last day of service will be Thursday 9/27/2018. We’d love to see you before we officially close the book on this amazing chapter of our lives.
