Teddy Sourias continues his takeover of the 1300 block of Chestnut Street with Kontrol, an underground bar next to his subterranean U-Bahn at 1320 Chestnut Street. Kontrol, reached via U-Bahn, opens Friday, September 7.
U-Bahn, which takes design inspiration from the German underground rail system, debuted in 2015 next to Sourias’ Bru Craft & Wurst (1318 Chestnut Street). Just last month, Sourias opened Tradesman’s, a big, bi-level beer, whiskey, and barbecue joint in the Tradesman’s Trust Building at 1322 Chestnut.
Kontrol, located underneath the Tradesman’s Trust Building, is in a passageway that connects the other properties. It will also lead to Verdickt, yet another new bar that will open under Tradesman’s later this year (or early 2019, depending on how construction goes). Verdickt will have its own entrance on Juniper Street.
The idea is to lead diners from dinner at Tradesman’s or Bru to drinks at Kontrol, before late-night at U-Bahn. You can get to all the venues without stepping outside.

Kontrol has food but it’s more bar than restaurant, with a focus on cocktails — a departure for Sourias, who’s usually all about the beer. The design includes a glass wall that looks onto the original door from the Tradesman’s Trust Company’s cellar vault.
Peep the food and drink menus below.
For now, Kontrol is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The other days of the week it will be available for private events. Look for the hours to expand later this fall.
