University City is home to Philly’s newest rooftop destination for outdoor drinking and dining. The seasonal Sunset Social, a burger joint with a bar built from those giant shipping containers designers love to repurpose, opens 12 floors above street level at Cira Green on Monday, May 6.
Cira Green (129 S. 30th Street) is the 1.25-acre green landscaped roof atop the Cira Centre South parking garage, located just across the Schuylkill River from Center City. On ground level, there’s The Post, the new bar with arcade games, and all-day restaurant Walnut Street Cafe. Both are from restaurateur Branden McRill and developer Brandywine Realty Trust — the team who’s also behind Sunset Social. Director of operations Mel Fuechtmann is also involved in all three.
For Sunset Social, chef/culinary director Jack Peterson put together a menu of burgers, sandwiches, and fries. The burgers, like the Big Kahuna with bacon, jalapeño, pineapple, and barbecue sauce, are available as single or double patties. The Philly option has pork roll, cheese sauce, and a fried egg, and the Jawnion is topped with onion rings and barbecue sauce.
There’s also a veggie burger, a fried chicken sandwich with buttermilk ranch and pickles, chicken fingers, a corn dog, and a quinoa and farro bowl with chicken, avocado, corn, and tomato. The fries can come smothered in bacon and cheese.
To drink, look for beers on draft and in bottles, red, white, and rosé wine by the glass or by the 1-liter bag, and summery frozen cocktails. The Strawberry Sky is a frosé daiquiri, the Cloud 9 Colada is a piña colada, and the Up in the Air is a blend of the two.
Cira Green also has a giant screen for movies, plus lounge chairs and lots of plants.
Starting May 6, Sunset Social is open every day from 11 a.m. to midnight.
