The Hottest New Restaurants in Philly, September 2023
The best new places to get tasty soul food, impressive Mediterranean, incredible barbecue, and groundbreaking vegan cuisine

Töska Restaurant & Brewery
This new hotspot is shaking the table in Germantown with its Albanian twist on culinary classics. Their wood-fired pizza is worth trying a slice (or the whole pie), their in-house brewery is serving inventive IPAs by the can, and their spacious venue is perfect to watch a game or host a dinner party.

Next of Kin
Many are already hailing this the ultimate date spot in Philly with its intimate decor, playful pop-up cuisine (shout-out to Chef Reuben Asaram), enticing playlist, and decadent cocktails. Next of Kin is unapologetic in making this a bar for grown folks to mix and mingle.
Elma
Finally, a BYOB that returns its focus to exceptional food without the fuss and circumstance. Elma describes itself as a “nice little restaurant,” they are having major epic fun with a creative menu that includes putting a 35 gram dollop of caviar on top of a smoked salmon stuffed brioche, stuffing a brioche doughnut with strawberry jam and vanilla pastry cream, and hosting fried calamari parties. Fishtown, we have a (delicious) problem.
Poison Heart
Sometimes you just want a bar that’s dope without rubbing it in your face — one with great cocktails and a chill vibe. Poison Heart excels at being the new cool kid on the block for those who just want to sip on their impeccable Sazeracs and shuck their great taste in oysters.
The Lucky Well Incubator
Chef Chad Rosenthal has outdone himself with the perfect solution for the undecided diner — one spacious restaurant that showcases four great chefs cooking different culinary concepts. At the new Lucky Well Incubator, customers get their choice between tasty barbecue, Vietnamese bone marrow, Navajo tacos, Italian — or all of them at the same damn time. Come with a craving for their grilled oysters, stay for the chance to try that — and their remarkable burger.
Pod
This isn’t conceptually new — but it’s definitely new and improved. Let’s call it Pod: Reloaded. After years of the Korean-focused K-Pod, Steven Starr has gone back to his crowd-pleasing original that was long missed. Pod returns with sushi extraordinaire Kevin Yanaga and longtime Starr chef Kenjiro Omori at the helm to give diner a tour-de-force Japanese culinary experience.
Fringe Bar
This lively new “soulful cuisine” pub is impressing diners around Penn’s Landing with their flavorful burgers, eggplant Banh-Mi, sizzling steak and potatoes, and more. Even their cocktails, such as the “Molly the Mermaid” (which includes Teremana tequila, butterfly pea flower, St. Germain, grapefruit, lime, and glitter), packs a unique punch.

Osteria Ama Philly
This new Italian BYOB in Rittenhouse Square couldn’t have been at the perfect location at the best time. With the closing of beloved Roman-style Pizza joint Rione nearby, customers can still have a taste of Little Italy in this cozy restaurant that serves classics (such as limoncello risotto with seared scallops, eggplant napoleone, and capriciosa sandwiches) with modern flair.
Vinyl
Finally a live show bar with spectacular cocktails, well-prepared bites, and a classy ambiance, Vinyl isn’t snobby, but it’s also not a mosh pit of a space. It’s the venue where you can drink a tantalizing cocktail (such as their “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” that includes cocchi americano bianco, lavender, lemon, and bubbles) and be impressed by their delicious servings of tacos, flatbreads, pierogis and sliders.
Enswell
Enswell is a fascinating place that was made for now and wouldn’t have seemed possible (or have made sense) a decade ago. A fine dining spot that does it all — cocktail bar, cafe, bottle shop, culinary art served on a plate — so well. When you’re serving an entrees that include wagyu flank steak and cocktails made with Liberty Belle Creme de Violette, it’s hard to deny the notable effort.
Casablanca Mediterranean Grill
For over 30 years, Lebanese deli Bitar’s was the owner of this South Philly address. But now new Mediterranean gem Casablanca has already proven it’s here to stay. The Middle Eastern restaurant has been impressing diners in Passyunk Square with their delicious grilled lamb, falafel, wholesome grape leaves, baba ghanoush, hummus, and incredible tabbouleh.

Nipotina
There’s a lot of sandwich joints that pop up in Philly, but this new spot is one worth checking out. The next great cheesesteak might be here — one that’s ambitiously made with fried salami, long hot peppers, melted Cooper sharp American, and juicy ribeye all on a seeded roll. There’s also succulent cutlets, vegan hoagie options, and a “hangover cure” sandwich that’s made with ribeye steak, Cooper Sharp American, smashed tater tots, scrambled eggs, and sriracha. This is your warning to check it out before the line get too long.
Ground Provisions
The incredible chefs behind the award-winning Vedge in Rittenhouse Square take their vegan talents across the Delaware River with a restaurant that’s experimentally delicious. “Housemade sausage” for them is wheat protein seared up with peperonata and broccoli rabe. Impress yourself by trying their trumpet mushroom barbacoa, with a charred eggplant dip and a kimchi noodle salad. Whatever you eat here, just remember — it’s plant-based and will still be one of the best new meals you’re eating this year.
Gass & Main
Chef Dane Demarco doesn’t play with their portions here at the new Gass & Main. This is fine-comfort-food-dining with hearty tasty selections such as chicken a la king, Sunday gravy, and s scrumptious peach cobbler. Everything tastes as great as it looks on their Instagram page — a rare feat.
Rosemary
Chef Elijah Milligan brings his love of ambitious grilling, searing, and notable seasoning to Ridley Park with a bang. This charming restaurant rolls out entrees that are flavorfully comforting, yet still surprising (such as their raw oysters with yuzu gelee and jalapeño or salmon with couscous, radicchio and a pop of limoncello).
