The unsung hero of any great meal is the bread service. Whether it's a server walking around with tongs and a wicker basket, or a warm bowl of tiny little brioche buns with salted butter, bread service is the first impression a restaurant makes on a diner. And, sometimes it's more than just the crusty loaf in front of you, as a good spread and accoutrement can raise the bread to an amazing course all its own. And, good bread isn't available only at restaurants. Philly has a clutch of great bakeries that answer the call for anyone in need of a starchy treat.

Here now, we present a list of the 10 Best Bites of Bread in Philly. Did we miss any great loaves or rolls? Please leave your intel in the comments below, or drop us a message on the tipline.

Fork Restaurant

The housemade onion bialy chef Eli Kulp added to the menu is a starchy epiphany, and reason alone to visit the new & improved Fork.

Artisan Boulanger Patissier

For 25 years, Andre Chin and Amanda Eap have been turning out the finest bread loaves in the city at Artisan Boulanger. The multi-grain is amazing, but get the oversized pale and beautiful country loaf.
Everything at Zahav is fantastic, but the real crowd pleaser is Mike Solomonov's hummus, which is served with laffa, an Israeli flatbread, baked to order.
Half of the ownership behind Fond is pastry chef Jessie Prawlucki, and that means a serious bread basket. The sourdough is good, but the headliner is that amazing olive bread.

Parc Brasserie

Since the day it opened up shop 5 years ago, the bread at Parc has been one of the main attractions for the Rittenhouse brasserie. The baguette is great, the country loaf is to die for.

Kanella: Greek Cypriot Kitchen

The always-passionate chef, Konstantinos Pitsillides, offers up many different loaves, but his sourdough slices are a thing of beauty. He uses underripe grapes while fermenting his dough to add extra tang. And it's oh-so-delicious.

Modo Mio

The Pugliese loaf at Modo Mio is a super thick-crusted beast with a crumb as dense as San Francisco fog. But, it makes this list for the porcini oil and ricotta spread that come along for the ride, as well.
For all the great food available at Chifa, the best thing on the menu is the free bread, which are yuca flour cheese rolls with a sweet guava butter. Make the trip.

Talula's Table

Aimee Olexy's market by day/chef's table by night does everything right, and the bread alone is worth the 40 minute drive from the city.

Metropolitan Bakery

Metropolitan Bakery, a Philly institution, is celebrating their 20th birthday this year. Their extensive expansion over the last two decades hasn't diluted the quality one bit.
